Art For Stress Therapy | Ideas to Relieve Stress

Painting My Worries Away

How I Use Art To Help Me Relieve My Stress

Sometimes the stress and worry can get overbearing, and even I can find myself spiraling down into a pool of gloom.

Have you ever felt like it’s easier to be mad than it is to be happy, when times seem rough? Have you ever noticed that we jump at the chance to write a negative review for something bad, yet we don’t have the same motivation to write a positive review for something good?

Well, I’ve noticed--and I don’t think I’m alone in this!

So here’s what I’ve done to help lift my spirit when I find myself in a low vibration:

Step One: Identify one of your most favorite activities, and immerse yourself in it fully. For me, it’s painting and sharing my painting tutorials.

Step Two: Make a list of what you love about that activity.

    1. I love the craft stores. I’ve often said I would love to camp out in a Hobby Lobby.
    2.
I love planning out what I am going to paint next and searching for inspiration.
    3.
I love the way it feels when I’ve finished a painting, and I’m taking photos.
    4. I love video editing and putting together my tutorial videos, especially the dialog.
    5. I just love painting.

I just wrote the word "love" five times…now how could I not be feeling better already, right?!

Step Three: Find a way to have those activities ready at a moment's notice. Here are some of the ways I've accomplished each of the activities I listed above:

1. Getting in a car and driving while upset isn’t really a good idea, and neither is binge spending. But taking what I already have and making my own little craft shop in my home is a great idea, right? Open the door, and voila--the site and smells of a craft store instantly bring a smile to my face! Here is a fun little video showing you how I created my own little slice of craft shop heaven in my home.

2.  I always have paper and pencil ready to sketch, and a flashlight, should the urge hit me in the middle of the night. Sometimes I search online for ideas, and sometimes I paint what I see in my dreams. Other times I take inspiration from what is right in front of me (like my kitties), or I go out for a walk to see what I see; then I use a little basket and visit my “in-home craft store” and “shop” for everything I’m going to need.

3. I bought a little photo cube, and I'm learning how to use it.  I’m also learning about light and angles. You might notice from my photos that I'm obviously still in the learning phase, but that’s totally o.k. because this gives me a project to lose myself in for a while.

4. I have been a computer geek since the day the Apple 2e was introduced to me. I'm dating myself a bit, but who cares? In my view, age is a badge of honor!

I really enjoy editing the videos and finding just the right music, but the most fun for me is the dialog. I get into such a happy place. I am smiling and laughing, and my arms are waving around…it’s quite a sight, actually!

5. What really brings me to a place of peace and relieves stress the most is the actual painting. Once I have all of my supplies set up and ready to go, as soon as my brush touches down, I enter into a state of calm. And it doesn’t matter what I’m painting…or if it turns out good…or not!

I guess the whole purpose of this blog is to share some of the ways I find peace in the chaos of life. Everyone has their own unique interest that can bring peace of mind. So try focus on whatever it is that makes you happy, instead of whatever is causing you angst.

For me it's painting, and everything involved in sharing what I’ve learned. Painting is my passion, and it just might become a passion for you as well.

Here is one of my painting tutorials that I recommend you try the next time you need to find a way to let the stress go. I am Deborah Kaye and I invite you Paint With A Passion!
